MINOO DINSHAW ON THE BYZANTINE LIFE OF STEVEN RUNCIMAN
Steven Runciman was a pioneering historian of the Crusades and Byzantium who managed to combine the highest standards of scholarship with a wide readership. But despite his life-long commitment to the pursuit of historical truth, Runciman was also fascinated by more esoteric interests. A member of the Whirling Dervishes, he became obsessed with tarot, second sight, ghosts and the paranormal. His enormous range of friends and acquaintances, including many of the major figures of the time, colour the biography of a man who was as attached to the remote Inner Hebrides as he was to the bustle of Istanbul.
Runciman’s biographer, the young historian Minoo Dinshaw, will talk about the remarkable character brought to life in his acclaimed debut, Outlandish Knight: The Byzantine Life of Steven Runciman (Allen Lane, 2016).
Minoo Dinshaw will be in conversation with Savilian Paul Lay, Editor of History Today.
