TO WAR WITH THE WALKERS – ANNABEL VENNING IN CONVERSATION WITH SAVILIAN DAVID OLDROYD-BOLT
Annabel Venning will be talking on the subject of her new book, To War with
the Walkers: Three Soldiers, a War Bride, a Nurse and a Doctor, One Family’s Extraordinary Story of the Second World War.
To War with the Walkers, named as one of The Times books of the year 2019, is the incredible true story of her maternal grandfather Walter Walker’s family during the Second World War.
The Walkers, Arthur and Dorothea and their six children, lived in Tiverton in Devon but they were an Empire family – generations of them had lived and worked in India, mainly as army officers and doctors.
By the time the Second World War broke out those six children were all aged between twenty and thirty and all became embroiled in the war.
The book follows their stories, from the London Blitz to the Prisoner of War camps on the Death Railway in Thailand, the battlefields of Asia and Europe.
Annabel Venning was brought up in Hong Kong, Brunei, Germany and England, educated at Durham University and worked as a journalist on the Daily Mail before becoming a freelance writer and publishing her first book, Following the Drum in 2005. She lives in Wiltshire with her husband, the writer and broadcaster Guy Walters.
