SAVILE FEZ DINNER

The Honourable Society of the Fez is delighted to announce the return of the Fez Dinner to the Savile Club on Wednesday the 9th of October, 2024.

A year ago, we were honoured that so many members were able to share in our feztivities. This autumn presided over by the Three Pashas, we can look forward to more merriment and good cheer. Chef Michael will be preparing a sumptuous feast, Efendis John Higgins and Stephan von Schilling will be present to ensure good feziquette, and by popular demand, the Club Camel (Dervishes Sam Casey & Sam Jewison) will make a return!

It may not be known to all members that the Honourable Society of the Fez holds both the wearing of the fez (or tarboosh) and the liberal imbibing of wine to be equally dear and cherished pastimes. This year we are fortunate that wine committee member Dervish Jonathan Royals has given careful consideration to the appellation, terroir and balance of the wines to be served at the Fez Dinner so that as the Persian poet Omar Khayyam put it, ‘you in your cup have gold, rubies, pearls and dreams’.

Members of the society may be interested to note that another link between the fez and the Savile Club has been established by fez society historian Dervish Marcus Potter. The much-celebrated portrait of the Egyptian ruler Mohammad Ali Pasha sporting a fine red tarboosh (fez) that has been used to illustrate this notice was painted by a founder member of the Savile Club (then the New Club) – Thomas Brigstocke – in 1847 while on a sixteen-month sojourn in Egypt. We will hear more about this ‘bonkers member’ (to quote Dervish Potter) during our dinner.   

Since we last met, the Honourable Society of the Fez has been active in its calling. Pasha Tom McDavid carried out important diplomatic duties in Seville (a city where all residents are Sevillian), Pasha Simon Seear founded a branch of the Fez Society at the Melbourne Savage Club in Australia, and as this notice is written, Dervish Simon Des Jardins is packing his fez to take on an adventure along the Silk Road.

The Honourable Society of the Fez looks forward to welcoming all Savilians to our October gathering, and beholding once more, the inspiring sight of a beautiful sea of red and maroon fezzes along with tables laden with good food and wine.
