COMPOSERS AT THE SAVILE A PIANO RECITAL BY SAVILIAN ALEXANDER (SASHA) KARPEYEV

To mark the date on which, 150 years ago, when the first subscriptions (£2 2s per annum!)

became due for the founder members of the New Club which, from October 1870 was renamed the Savile Club.

The list of eminent composers who have belonged to the Club encompasses great names of twentieth-century British music; the concert will include works by Savilians Sir Edward Elgar,

Sir Charles Hubert Parry, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Sir Arthur Bliss, Sir William Walton, Sir Malcolm Arnold and many others too.

Sasha Karpeyev is a prize winner in several international piano competitions and he recently featured as ‘One to watch’ in International Piano magazine.  A debut CD, The Final Flowering – dedicated to Russian émigré composers following the Revolution – will be released shortly.  His recital of the programme at King’s Hall, London prompted music critic Michael White to write

“It was in epic scores by Medtner and Stravinsky that Karpeyev really triumphed, playing them with virtuosity and more: the deep, internalised musicianship of a master.”

Karpeyev’s ‘Composers at the Savile’ programme will also be recorded, for a CD that will be released to members and later to the public too.

Savilian Felix Rigg will host the concert.
