A SAVILE SCIENCE AND SAVILE SCHOLARSHIPS COMBINED EVENT

SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION – the three scholars selected by King’s College London, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Goldsmiths and approved by the Club will be introduced by their sponsors.  Each will provide a short description of the additional project work they have, or will be able to undertake, as a result of the award by the Club.

Following the presentation of the Scholarships, SAVILIAN CRAWFORD KINGSNORTH, MICHELLE SPILLER, ROB LEHMAN AND DAVID PATERSON will give a talk on DNA FROM ALL THE ANGLES.

Rosalind Franklin was an exceptionally gifted practical scientist.  She was able to extract high quality DNA and provide the crucial crystallographic evidence that allowed Crick and Watson to solve the double helical structure of DNA. But what has happened since this discovery?

This talk will provide an update on DNA and will look into the structure of DNA and how this allowed the code to be broken – a task involving a gargantuan data set.  We will also look into the future uses of this technology.

This will be a practical session so please be prepared to assist with the demonstrations.

SAVILIAN DR CRAWFORD KINGSNORTH is Head of science and biology at Norwich High School for Girls; MICHELLE SPILLER and ROB LEHMAN work at Cambridge International Education; and DAVID PATERSON has a PhD in Protein Crystallography and teaches chemistry at Aldenham School in Elstree where he specialises in making practical work more effective in the classroom.
