GOTHIC OPERA EVENING

Join Gothic Opera in a programme of rarely-heard repertoire that celebrates the heroines of the Gothic. Forgotten works by Gounod and Verdi are performed alongside those by lesser-known female composers such as Louise Bertin and Pauline Viardot. Each piece brings to life the creations of Gothic authors, from poet Anne Hunter to Walter Scott and Matthew Gregory Lewis. 

Gothic Opera was founded in 2019 by sopranos Alice Usher, Charlotte Osborn and Béatrice de Larragoïti. Gothic Opera creates atmospheric performances that explore the more unusual corners of the operatic repertoire, casting a fresh light on the art form in a way that may challenge the preconceptions of an audience. Fully staged productions to date are: Der Vampyr by Marschner (2019), a retelling of Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle (2021), and the Off-West End award-winning La Nonne sanglante by Gounod (also in 2021).

In 2022, Gothic Opera presents a Halloween double bill of forgotten operas by female nineteenth century French composers: Le Loup-garou by Louise Bertin and Le dernier sorcier by Pauline Viardot.
