PROFESSOR JOHN BEW ON CLEMENT ATTLEE, ‘CITIZEN CLEM’
Professor John Bew, of King’s College London, will be talking about his recent Orwell-prize winning biography of Clement Attlee, ‘Citizen Clem’. Professor Bew argues that Attlee is in need of a re-assessment, his Government’s achievements being seen in the context of governments before and since which have not been as impressive ‘problem solvers’ as his was. His Governments over 1945-51 provided independence for India, as well as extricating Britain from Palestine, creating the National Health Service and creating the Green Belt protecting the countryside from urban sprawl.
The event will be chaired by Savilian Paul Lay, Editor of History Today.
