SAVILE HISTORY – SAVILIAN TIM HALSTEAD ON: MORE THAN VICTIMS OF HORACE. CHAIRED BY SAVILIAN MIKE SENIOR

Tim Halstead will be speaking about his latest book, More than Victims of Horace. The involvement of public school boys in the Great War has often been seen in terms of ‘a race of innocents dedicated to romantic ideals.’ Tim reexamines this idea in his book and argues that public school involvement is far more nuanced than this. His talk he will include a discussion of the part of Thomas Hughes and Rudyard Kipling in the development of the idea of public school ethos.

More Than Victims of Horace is Tim Halstead’ second book; his first being A School in Arms: Uppingham and the Great War. His other work, mainly about public school involvement in the Great War, includes chapters in edited volumes and articles for academic journals. He was educated at Uppingham and was awarded an MA in British First World War Studies by the University of Birmingham. He works for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is Honorary Treasurer of the British Commission for Military History.
