Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) was a member of the Savile from 1956-2006. He was a legend for his compositional output – a steady of symphonies, overtures, dances, concertos and solo pieces throughout his life, to say nothing of a March for the Padstow Lifeboat and a Concerto for Hoover in F for the legendary Hoffnung concerts – as well as scoring some of the most famous films of the 1950s such as Bridge Over the River Kwai for which he won an Oscar.
We are celebrating the centenary of his birth with a Colloquium about his place in 20thC music, a live Concert of his music & Dinner at the Savile Club.
The Malcolm Arnold Centenary Celebration will feature a Colloquium at 5pm on Arnold’s legacy with his biographer Paul Jackson and Tony Palmer, chaired by Michael Maxwell Steer. Within the discussion there will be clips from Palmer’s biographical documentary Toward the Unknown Region and examples of Arnold’s feature film work.
At 7pm there will be a Concert of Sir Malcolm’s music by by Dan Bovey, Alexander Karpeyev, Alfie Weinberg, Aled Meredith-Barrett & Connaught Brass including his Centenary Fanfare for the Savile, Fantasies for Guitar and Tuba, Five Pieces for Violin & Piano, Variations on an Ukrainian Folksong for piano (as recorded by Sasha on the recent Savile CD) and Arnold’s justly famed Brass Quintet.
Followed by Dinner at 8pm.

Daniel Bovey*, guitar, is well-known to Savile audiences from our Aperitif concerts. As well as an international solo career, he plays with the Vickers-Bovey Guitar Duo and Omega Guitar Quartet. He plays Arnold’s Fantasy for Guitar, op107, dating from 1971.
Alexander Karpeyev plays Arnold’s Variations on an Ukrainian Theme, op9, which he recorded for the Savile 150th Celebration CD. As well as being a concert pianist and recitalist Sasha is Music Director of Pushkin House, and this year released an acclaimed CD of Medtner songs with Sofia Fomina.
Aled Meredith-Bennett*, tuba, is a postgrad student at the RAM and a member of the London Sinfonietta Academy & LPO Foyle Future Firsts. He plays Arnold’s Fantasy for Tuba, op102, dating from 1969.
Alfie Weinberg*, plays Five Pieces for Violin (op84, 1964) accompanied by Alexander Karpeyev. Alfie studies at the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He was formerly at Chethams School.
Connaught Brass play Arnold’s Quintet 1 (op73, 1960). Winners of inaugural Philip Jones Competition, Connaught Brass have had a Britten Pears Chamber Music Residency this year. Aaron Akugbo – Trumpet, Harry Plant – Trumpet, Robyn Blair – Horn, Chris Brewster – Trombone, Aled Meredith-Barrett – Tuba. Aaron & Harry are also playing Arnold’s Fanfare for the Savile Centenary.
