To coincide with the Savile Club’s loan of a painting by its former member Sir William Nicholson to the major exhibition of his work at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, its Director Simon Martin will present an illustrated lecture on the artist’s remarkable life and work. It will explore the artist’s extraordinary creativity in different media from bold ‘Beggarstaff’ poster designs and iconic woodcut prints (several of which are displayed in the Club) to dazzling still lifes, evocative views of the Downland landscape and insightful portraits.

Simon Martin has written numerous books on British art and artists, including on Glyn Philpot, John Piper, Eduardo Paolozzi, John Minton and thematic studies such as ‘Drawn to Nature: Gilbert White and the Artists’ (on which he spoke at the Savile Club in 2024). He is the co-editor of a new monograph on Nicholson, published to coincide with the exhibition.
John Gill chairs the Savile Club Art Committee. Now retired, he has spent four decades working with visual artists as director and curator in galleries and arts agencies in the public sector. He was founding chairman and board member of several arts charities across the UK, and author of books and articles about arts and culture. In 2015/16 he held a Visiting Fellowship at Harvard where he continued his ongoing research into theatrical portraiture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Away from artists’ studios, he is generally to be found in concert halls and opera houses indulging his passion for music.

Cherubim’s own ‘u-Tuba’ Dafydd Owen in a half hour of musical comedy showing unexpected versatility of the tuba, and ending with a sing-along of Gilbert & Sullivan and the Hippotamus Song (by Savilian Michæl Flanders) accompanied by Michael Maxwell Steer.

Derek Winterbottom is a biographer of Thomas Hughes and a historian whose books mainly focus on the Isle of Man and the British public schools. He has been a member of the Savile for many years but not as long as this famous Celtic cross has stood in its place in a Manx churchyard.
Thomas Hughes was almost a founder member of the Savile and was already famous throughout the British Empire as the author of ‘Tom Brown’s School Days’, based on his own experience of Rugby under Dr Arnold and published in 1857. It had an amazing impact on the development of education in Britain and elsewhere, as Derek will explain.
The Savile Wine Committee is organising another of the hugely enjoyed and popular “Call My Bluff” Wine Quizzes.
The Call My Bluff team are again Charlie Boyd and Molly Newport of Ellis of Richmond – one of our principal wine suppliers.
The format will be like the September 2025 quiz. Each table of eight – we can cater for eight tables – works as a team. There will be seven or eight different wines – all interesting and none on our Wine List. Served one by one, each wine will have two completely different stories told about it – origin, cepages, terroir etc. You taste, discuss, agree which is True and which is Bluff and vote as a team.
As last time, the wines will be accompanied by a half-time serving of antipasti and cheeses.
Whether you are of the wine cognoscenti or whether you just like wine and enjoy exploring it, this evening is for you – all.
Prizes too!
For Savile and Garrick Club members, wearing bow ties.
Limit- Maximum of 24 places (members only).

Lily Owens flute & Defne Anar harp, both Cherubim Young Musicians at the RAM.
